NoirSongs: Joy Division - Shadowplay

Both of my Noir Songs so far have been connected to the 1979 Futurama festival in Leeds- where I saw Joy Division before they went synthypop.

Very noir city,Leeds.

This is very cinematic and dramatic, eh?

To the centre of the city where all roads meet - waiting for you
To the depths of the ocean where all hopes sank - searching for you
Moving through the silence without motion - waiting for you
In a room with a window in the corner I found truth

In the shadowplay, acting out your own death - knowing no more

As the assassins all grouped in four lines, dancing on the floor
And with cold steel, odour on their bodies, made a move to connect
I could only stare in disbelief as the crowds all left

I did everything, everything I wanted to

I let them use you for their own ends
To the centre of the city in the night - waiting for you
To the centre of the city in the night - waiting for you

Another great noir album of the period was The Associates 1981, Fourth Drawer Down. Utilising synth (but also before they went pop) this album was one of the most inluential of the genre. Itself heavily influenced by that Ballardian sense of dystopia; a Very dark and foreboding sound. In particular the tracks, White Car In Germany, A Girl Named Property and Q-Quarters.

I used to have the singles. I was always a short attention span person.
